Types of Foam That Use Waterjet Cutting

     types of waterjetting foam

Our waterjet machine uses a jet stream of water forced through a tiny nozzle at high pressure to perform precision cutting, piercing accuracies of ± .005 and leaving a smooth, precise edge. The waterjet machine cuts through the top of the foam’s surfaces with a water pressure of 30,000 psi.  This machine’s pressure has the capability to cut wood, tiles, aluminum, and metals.

Look below at the different types of foam that we use when cutting with the waterjet machine….

Charcoal Firm Foam feels like the cushions on your couch but is firm and is recommended for items that weigh 50lbs or less.  It is often used when shipping fragile items.  The Charcoal Firm Foam provides a professional appearance for packaging and shipping fragile items such as glasses & bottles, musical instruments, and delicate tools. The foam comes in 1/2” through 6” thick.  If you need thicker, the foam pieces can be glued together. This is a very inexpensive solution to packaging breakable items. The adhesive backing is also available on the Charcoal Firm Foam.

Minicell foam has the look and feels of a computer mouse pad at a 2lbs density. This is closed-cell foam which means the surface is smooth and the finishes look more refined than open-cell foam. It can come with adhesive backing and is available in white, charcoal, grey, red, green, blue, yellow, and purple with variable thicknesses from 1/16” thick to 4”.  This is commonly used in packaging smaller items like screws, and tools in drawers, cases or boxes that may otherwise get lost.  This cutout foam is great for organization and also eye-appalling. Minicell knew as crosslink polyethylene is available in 2, 3, 4, and 6lb densities.

Polyethylene is a closed-cell foam and is less expensive than minicell foam. Polyethylene has the look and feel of a kid’s pool noodle.  Polyethylene is available in 2, 4, and 6lb. densities and recommended for items that are 50lbs or more.   It is durable and holds up over time especially for objects such as tools that are taken in and out of the cases often. Polyethylene foam will never fray around the edges and will self-heal if it accidentally gets punctured.

For thicker containers and cases, a mixture of open and closed cell foam can be used.  You can also glue a fabric material such as vinyl, velvet, or suede to give it a finished look.

At Foam N’ More, we can shave your cutout depths to various heights when you have different needs for the same container.  We can also add handles and glue a solid piece of foam at the bottom to create a second row of cutouts. For tube cutouts, we recommend leaving a 3/8” space between each one.

Polystyrene is available in a 1.5 density and is most often used for themed party decorations such as logos, numbers, names, dummy cakes, and many other wedding reception needs.

At Foam N’ More, we offer a variety of open-cell foams that are used for cushions, medical needs, and mattresses.
