The Best Sleep Positions for Lower Back Pain

The Best Sleep Positions for Lower Back Pain

Did you know more than three million people in the United States deal with chronic lower back pain?  Lower back pain is a very common problem, and it affects the lower portion of the spine. It can be caused by an injury to the muscle or ligament, bad posture, lack of regular exercise, and improper lifting.  Most of the time, lower back pain goes away in a couple of weeks, but you can ease the healing process by maintaining a good posture when you’re sleeping.

The most important thing when you’re sleeping is to keep your ears, shoulders, and hips aligned, and with the right sleep wedges, you can make any sleep position comfortable.  Here are some tips to make sure you get a restful night’s sleep no matter what position you sleep in:

    1. Back sleeping. If you prefer to sleep on your back, then it’s important to make sure your spinal cord is aligned properly.  Pick a pillow that supports your head, neck, and shoulders, and also insert one behind your knees.  Putting a pillow behind your knees will take the stress off of your lower back, and it will support your legs while you rest.  Orthopedic leg wedges such as this one are perfect to not only relieve the stress on your lower back but also to increase circulation to your limbs.

    2. Side sleeping. It can be challenging to maintain proper spinal alignment when you sleep on your side because the top leg can throw your hips out of alignment and add tension to your lower back.  To prevent this, a dog bone-shaped leg support inserted between your legs can keep your knees and back in alignment with your spine.

    3. Stomach sleeping. Stomach sleeping is a great way to relieve the pressure on your spinal cord, but it is also easy to throw your spine out of alignment if you use the wrong pillows.  If your preference is sleeping on your stomach, then you should utilize a flat pillow or no pillow for your head while adding a pillow under your hips and pelvis area.  You can use the same dog bone-shaped leg pillow that you use between your legs to support your pelvis and spine.

    4. Reclined position. If you feel the most comfortable sleeping in a recliner, then you can replicate that position in your bed with body wedges.  These body wedges can provide gentle support to elevate the torso or to use as a trunk stabilizer for side-lying positions.  They’re perfect for people with breathing problems, poor circulation, and people suffering from back and neck problems as well.

The best part about support wedges is that they fit with your current mattress.  There is no need to spend tons of money replacing a perfectly good mattress because you can purchase all the pillows you need to turn your existing sleeping surface into a comfortable, restful nightly oasis.
